Description

View of Pueblo, Pueblo County, C.O., 1890 / published by American Publishing Co.

This duel-view panoramic print of Pueblo, Colorado was published by American Publishing Co. in 1890. Pueblo was established at the confluence of Fountain Creek and the Arkansas River during Colorado’s gold rush years. Pueblo County was formed in 1861 with Pueblo as the seat of government.

The town was revitalized in the 1870's as the Colorado Central Improvement Co., a branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Company, began laying out much of the community’s format. In 1872 the county courthouse was completed and the D. & R. G. railroad completed its line to Pueblo.

Smelting furnaces began to appear in the south end of town beginning in the late 1870's. The Colorado Coal and Iron Co. organized in 1880. The firm immediately commenced the building of a large steel plant in that area. The firm employed many for their manufacture of pig iron, steel rails, stoves and machinery of all kinds. That coal and iron company merged in 1892 with the Colorado Fuel Company to form the huge Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. The new firm then began endeavors in mining and quarry operations throughout the region, as well as the valuable steel works at Pueblo.

Another major employer in Pueblo, during this era, was the Colorado State Insane Asylum, which later became Colorado State Hospital.

The map published in 1890 indicates Pueblo’s population to be 30,000. It includes a view looking north from West & 15th Sts. at the top and a view looking south from West & 15th Sts. on the bottom. Mountain peaks, railroad lines and Pueblo streets are all labeled. Featured are inset illustrations of the following:

• Fountain Lake Hotel.

• Colorado Mineral Palace.
• Philadelphia Smelting Works.
• Santa Fe Ave. looking northwest.
