This panoramic print of Red Wing, Minnesota was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Robert Teufel & Co. in 1868. Red Wing was established along the Mississippi River in the 1850's. Red Wing maintained as an agricultural community with wheat being the main crop grown. Platted in 1853, Red Wing was designated county seat of Goodhue County one year later.
A U. S. Land Office was opened there and construction of Hamline College began. The college, now located in St. Paul, was begun with donations made by Methodist Bishop Leonidas L. Hamline, on land donated by the city of Red Wing. The school operated in Red Wing until 1869 when it closed due to a lack of students, reopening some years later in St. Paul.
The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route. Riverboat activity is displayed in the foreground including featured steamer “Minnesota”. There are inset illustrations of the Public School, Hamline University and the Court House.
