Historic Map - Rhinebeck, NY - 1890
Description
This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Rhinebeck, New York was drawn and published by L. R. Burleigh in 1890. Rhinebeck flourished during the Gay Nineties, as flower-giving gained in popularity. The town maintained several "violet houses" during this era and became well known for them. Violets were the current craze in New York, which brought commerce to Rhinebeck. Its location in Dutchess County along the Hudson River about 100 miles from New York City made it an ideal get-a-way destination for the city's affluent.
The map from 1890 shows buildings and clearly labeled streets.
