Historic Map - Rochester, MN - 1869
Description
View of Rochester, Olmsted County, M.N., 1869 / drawn & published by A. Ruger.
This panoramic print of Rochester, Minnesota was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Ruger and Stoner in 1869. Rochester was little more than a stagecoach stop along the South Fork Zumbro River in the 1850's.
The first bridge across the Zumbro was built in 1855. The county seat town received much momentum in the 1860's when it was reached by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. Rochester’s Olmsted County Journal began publication in 1857.
Grain growing and timber harvesting were abundantly done in the area as well as the quarrying of limestone. Farmer John H. Whitney finalized his invented self-binding wheat harvester in 1868. The harvester received that year’s gold medal from the Minnesota State Agricultural Society.
Rochester’s four-story brick Central School Building was completed in 1868.
