Today the downtown area of Rutland is listed as an historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. The name Rutland was given to the town in 1761 by Governor Benning Wentworth who chose to name the small hamlet called Mill Village on Otter Creek after the 3rd Duke of Rutland, John Manners.
