Panoramic map of Rutland, Rutland County, VT drawn and published by L. R. Burleigh in 1885.

Today the downtown area of Rutland is listed as an historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.  This panoramic view captures Rutland as it appeared one year before the center of town was incorporated as a village.  The name Rutland was given to the town in 1761 by Governor Benning Wentworth who chose to name the small hamlet called Mill Village on Otter Creek after the 3rd Duke of Rutland, John Manners.
