Historic Map - San Francisco, CA - 1855
Description
In 1855 corruption and violence were prevalent throughout San Francisco. The City was a haven for robbers and mobs, quick to take advantage of the wealth that was being transported through the city. A Committee of Vigilance was created to combat the crime epidemic. This militia force was responsible for gathering up criminals; deporting most and hanging the rest. They forced suspected corrupt city officials to resign and generally helped civilize San Francisco..
