The city of San José was the first capital of California, and was incorporated as a city in 1850. It later grew to be the third largest city in California. This beautiful map provides a look back to the early beginnings of the city, long before it became known as "Silicon Valley." Also includes insets of the city's early buildings. "The lines of the Southern Pacific reach all parts of California and the Pacific Coast. Its coast line is now complete and in operation, which places San José directly on one of the great Transcontinental Thoroughfares of the Nation."
