Description

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. 1888. Drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh. Burleigh Lith. Est.

This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Saratoga Springs, New York was drawn and published by L. R. Burleigh in 1888. Saratoga Springs has long been known as a resort community near Saratoga Lake. The village of Saratoga Springs was incorporated in 1826. Construction of the Saratoga and Schenectady railroad began in 1831. Popular in the1800s for its mineral springs, Saratoga Springs was also home to the Saratoga Horse Race Course and had many fine hotels and resorts such as the Grand Union Hotel, which was considered the world's largest hotel until it was demolished in 1953. The springs have a sulfur odor, but are actually a form of hydrogen sulfide which degasses quickly from the water as it reaches the air. Tastes of the water vary from fresh to salty to sodium bicarbonate depending on the location.

The map from 1888 shows railroad route, buildings and clearly labeled streets. Includes an inset illustration of Saratoga Race Track.
