Description

Silver Creek, N.Y.

This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Silver Creek, New York was published by Burleigh Litho. Co. in 1892. Silver Creek is a village in Chautauqua County on the shore of Lake Erie. The Walnut and Silver Creeks run through town which made it an important port town during the early 1800's. In 1841, Silver Creek was the site where over two-hundred bodies washed ashore after the steamship Lake Erie caught fire and sank while transporting four hundred emigrants from Buffalo to Erie, PA.

Silver Creeks' landscape changed considerably with the addition, in 1851, of the Buffalo and State Line Railroad. In 1886, a train wreck at Silver Creek took twenty one lives when a passenger train full of tourists headed to Niagara Falls collided head-on with a freight train.

Two years before this map's publication Silver Creek's "Firemen's Celebration" involved over six hundred uniformed firemen participating in parades and shows, drawing an estimated 10,000 visitors to town.

This panoramic map of Silver Creek from 1892 shows buildings, clearly labeled streets and railroad route with trestle.
