Historic Map - Skaneateles, NY - 1884
Description
This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Skaneateles, New York was published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1884. Skaneateles is a town in Onondaga County formed in 1830. In 1843, a nearby 350 acre site was established as the "Skaneateles Community", a utopian, experimental, and self-sustaining society that lasted for three years. Established by the Society for Universal Inquiry and Reform and led by John A. Collins (1810-1900), a well-known abolitionist, the experiment proved economically viable, with about one hundred members working on a farm, sawmill and print shop. The community dissolved over internal issues.
When the railroad missed the town by five miles in the mid-1800's, Skaneateles quickly rallied to create their own connector route.
This panoramic map of Skaneateles from 1884 includes an inset illustration of Genesee Road. It shows buildings, clearly labeled streets and railroad route.
