Description

Somerville, New Jersey 1882. Drawn by T. M. Fowler. Beck & Pauli, lithographers.

Reproduction panoramic view of Somerville, New Jersey drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by Fowler & Evans in 1882. Somerville was a quiet farming community with rich American Revolutionary War history as George Washington spent one winter here with his troops camping nearby. Shale and red clay were found in abundance in this area and several brick and stone works were established here. When the railway was extended to reach Somerville in 1841 work began on a brick engine house, a wooden turntable and a frame passenger depot. Water power was developed along the nearby Raritan River in the 1850s, enabling industry to flourish with Somerville as its center of commerce.

The beautifully colored map from 1882 includes clearly labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes.
