Historic Map - St. Charles, MO - 1869
Description
Bird's eye view of the city of St. Charles, St. Charles Co., Missouri, 1869. Drawn by A. Ruger.
Reproduction map of the community known as St. Charles, MO, drawn by Prussian-born Albert Ruger. Northwest of St. Louis along the Missouri River, St. Charles was founded in 1765 by fur trader Louis Blanchette, who called it "Les Petites Cotes", or the "Little Hills". The first church was built in 1791, dedicated to San Carlos Borromeo, and the town became known as "San Carlos del Misuri", anglicized to "St. Charles of the Missouri".
Lewis & Clark set off westward from St. Charles on May 21, 1804. The first American-born European settlers in the area were Daniel Boone and his family. Spanish Lieutenant-Governor Carlos de Hault de Lassus appointed Boone as commandant of the Femme Osage District. Traveling through the region with Boone was a German visitor, Gottfried Duden, who wrote extensively about life in St. Charles County, and upon his return to Germany in 1829, his favorable reviews were published, and many Germans immigrated to St. Charles in 1833. German settlers developed a wine region and brought their hard work and community to the booming pioneer town.
The map features clearly labeled street names with lively scenes of railroad, carriage and pedestrian traffic. It features inset illustrations of Public School and Court House.
