This reproduction bird's-eye view map of St. Johnsville, New York was published by Lucien R. Burleigh around 1890. St. Johnsville is a town in Montgomery County along the Mohawk River. This agricultural community maintained large farmlands along the Mohawk Flats and vast pastures and dairy farms in the uplands. Manufacturers such as M. Williams established the St. Johnsville Agricultural Works, making various farming implements. Other principal products of St. Johnsville in the 1800's included castings, paper, carpets and woolen goods. The area had fine stone quarries, pictured in the hills above town, which were used to supply stone used in the building of the Erie Canal. The canal paralleled the Mohawk River at St. Johnsville until 1842 when it was filled in and the railroad laid as it is shown here, in the 1890s. In 1883, St. Johnsville was the site of a devastating train wreck when two trains, the Albany Local and the Syracuse Express ran head-on just west of Diefendorf Hill. Featured in the foreground is one of many wooden bridges that were built throughout Montgomery County in the 1800's.
This panoramic illustrated map from the 1890's shows buildings, railroad route and clearly labeled streets.
