Description

The panorama of St. Louis. Designed by Chas. Juehne.

Reproduction panorama map of the city known as St. Louis, MO, designed by Chas. Juehne. The main artery running north-south through the business district of St. Louis was Broadway. During the 1880's and 1890's several tall structures were built along this corridor. The relocation in 1880 of Barr's store to Sixth and Olive, and the move of Scruggs-Vandervoort and Barney to the corner of Broadway and Locust in 1888 were big indicators of the changing times. With the elevator's popularity, structures of ten or more stories began to go up. Steel frames were now used to construct such structures as the ten-story Wainwright Building at Seventh Street and Chestnut and the fifteen-story building at 705 Olive Street. They called them skyscrapers.

In 1893 the New Planter's Hotel re-opened with a new building on the site of the Old Planter's House, which had served travelers since 1841. Washington Avenue began taking shape as a major wholesale district.

The panorama map features lively scenes of railroad, riverboat, carriage and pedestrian traffic.
