Description

St. Louis in 1896.

Reproduction panorama lithograph of the city known as St. Louis, MO, drawn by Chas. Juehne in 1896. St. Louis is prone to tornados in the spring because of its location amid humid subtropical air and a humid continental climate with no mountains or large bodies of water to moderate the temperatures. Springs can produce cold Arctic storms and tornados. On May 27, 1896 one of the worst disasters in St. Louis' history occurred when a major tornado swept over the south side of town through Lafayette Park and toward the river at Eads Bridge. In the late 1890s automobiles began to appear on the streets of town. The main artery running north-south through the business district of St. Louis was Broadway. During the 1880s and 1890s several tall structures were built along this corridor. They called them skyscrapers. With the elevator's popularity, structures of ten or more stories began to go up. Steel frames were now used to construct such structures as the ten-story Wainwright Building at Seventh Street and Chestnut and the fifteen-story building at 705 Olive Street. The new Union Station opened in 1894.

The panorama image features lively scenes of railroad, riverboat, carriage, automobile and streetcar traffic.
