This panoramic print of St. Paul, Minnesota was drawn on stone by J. Queen and published by Thompson Ritchie in 1853. The area along the Mississippi River that became known as St. Paul was purchased from Dakota Indians in the early 1800's and Fort Saint Anthony was built there.
The fort was renamed Fort Snelling in 1825. The important safe haven for westward settlers was home to slave Dred Scott in the 1830's.
The Minnesota Territory was designated in 1849 with St. Paul named as its capital. By 1850, St. Paul contained 257 families and held a population of 1,294. A county court house was completed in 1853.
The illustration shows St. Paul from the early wilderness across the river.
