This reproduction panoramic map of Superior, Wisconsin was drawn by Henry Wellge and published by J. J. Stoner in 1883. It is a bird's-eye view showing St. Louis, Superior and Allouez Bays along with the ports and the metropolitan areas of Superior. Rice's Point, in Duluth, can be seen at the distant left. Superior, county seat for Douglas County, was settled in the mid-1800's with the completion of its famous ship canal and locks. The locks permitted larger ships access to Superior's harbor. With the addition of the Northern Pacific Railway, Superior was a major shipping and railway community transporting lumber and iron ore.
