This panoramic print of Uniontown, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897. Uniontown was established in the late 1700's along the early Cumberland Road. Later it was served by the Pennsylvania, and Baltimore and Ohio railroads. The Columbia Rolling Mill employed much of Uniontown until closing in 1895. Uniontown prospered with the bituminous coal boom era. The map shows Uniontown three years after a major strike at the coal works paralyzed and stunned the town.
The interstate strike between workers and mine owners over wages was slated to last eight weeks, but ended without success. Owners wouldnt budge and hired armed guards to protect the coal works. On the 23rd of May 1894, a clash between 1500 striking workers and the guards left 5 killed and 8 wounded. Most of the strikers went back to work by the end of June out of necessity.
The map from 1897 includes labeled streets, buildings, bridges and railroad routes.
