Description

The city of Vineland, New Jersey, 1885.

Reproduction panoramic view of Vineland, New Jersey drawn and published by O. H. Bailey & Co. in 1885. Vineland was incorporated as a borough just five years before this map's publishing. The land on which Vineland stands was purchased and developed by lawyer Charles Kline Landis twenty years earlier. Landis had previously established Hammonton, N. J. and now set upon designing Vineland and its attributes. Upon discovery that the area's soil was perfect for growing grapes, he advertised it as such and attracted many grape growers. In 1865 Charles B. Welch, a devout Methodist Episcopalian, relocated to Vineland where he developed his famous non-alcoholic grape juice. He had long sought a method of creating a pasteurized non-fermented grape drink for use in communion services. Mr. Landis had created Vineland as a dry town and forbidden the sale of alcohol in the community. He also required any purchasers of land to build houses within a year of sale, to clear and farm at least 2½ acres per year, and to leave adequate space between their homes and others. Landis Avenue was constructed as a 100 foot wide arterial through town and residents were required to leave enough room between houses and roads for trees and flowers. In 1866 Landis shot and killed the town's newspaper editor for an article written questioning his wife's sanity. In his defense Landis claimed temporary insanity and was found not guilty. Landis would continue to develop towns in New Jersey such as Landisville and Sea Isle City. Vineland's popularity grew with its reputation as having a healthful environment.
