This bird’s-eye view print of Virginia City, Nevada was drawn and published by Augustus Koch, Britton, Rey & Co. in 1875. When silver was discovered in the late 1850's Virginia City’s population boomed with the arrival of miners, speculators, railroad men and merchants, all eager to gain from the discovery.
The map shows Virginia City at the peak of its silver mining prosperity. The mines later diminished and the town was largely abandoned. A great fire in 1875 caused millions of dollars of damages in Virginia City.
Samuel Clemens first used his pen name of Mark Twain in the 1860's when he worked as a reporter for the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City.
