Description

Wappingers Falls, N.Y. Drawn and published by L. R. Burleigh. Burleigh Lith. Est.

This bird's-eye view map of Wappingers Falls, New York was published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1889. The local legend surrounding Wappingers Falls reports that in the mid-1600s, two New York City merchants, Francis Rombout and Gulian Verplanck bargained with the Wappani Indians to purchase land. Agreeing to the purchase for the vague description "all the land that could be seen", Rombout quickly climbed to the top of Mount Beacon and expanded his claim dramatically. This land patent would include the city of Beacon and the towns of Fishkill and Wappinger Falls.

Wappinger Falls prospered in the late 1800s with the massive Calico Printing Works housed within thirteen factory buildings located on the Wappinger Creek waterfront below its cascading falls.

Irving Grinnell, a wealthy New Yorker and philanthropist retired early to Wappingers Falls and together with the local Zion Church minister Henry Yates Satterlee, established a library in 1867 at the corner of Market and East Main Streets. By 1880 the need for a larger library was apparent and funds were acquired to build a new library at the corner of East Main and Spring Streets. Grinnell brought in a New York City architect to design his dream library which included a tower resembling one he'd seen in St. Battenberg, Switzerland and with the top story overhanging the bottom as buildings he'd recalled seeing in Chester, England. The library was entered through a turret to a winding staircase leading to an upstairs circulating library and reading room. The lower story maintained as a meeting room that could be rented out. The new Grinnell Library was chartered in the year before this map's publication. The village of Wappingers Falls was incorporated in 1871.

This panoramic map from 1889 shows buildings, railroad routes and clearly labeled streets.
