Reproduction map of the community known as Washington, MO, drawn by Prussian born Albert Ruger. Since 1814 ferry boats have crossed the Missouri River here. Known today for its fine wines, this community in eastern Missouri is the "Corncob Pipe Capital of the World". In 1869 Dutch woodworker Henry Tibbe began making corncob pipes and sold them in his shop. As they resembled German Meerschaum pipes he labeled them Missouri Meerschaums. Today the Missouri Meerschaum Company produces 5,000 pipes per day and ships them worldwide.
