This bird's eye view map of Watertown, Wisconsin was drawn by Henry Wellge and published by Norris, Wellge & Co. in 1885, reprint. Watertown is located in both Dodge and Jefferson Counties. It began as a lumber town with a few mills taking advantage of the swift moving waters of the Rock River as it takes its final horseshoe bend before flowing southwest to the Mississippi River. The area is distinguished by its drumlin-like hills formed by glacial retreat. In the late-1800's, an influx of German immigrants moved into Watertown and their addition changed the town considerably. Germans brought their brewing skills to the community, as well as furniture making and cigar manufacturing. The country's first kindergarten was started in Watertown. In 1885 Watertown celebrated its last Saenger-Fest, a grand spectacle sponsored by the German Singing Societies of Wisconsin, with the whole town decorating and trimming their homes and businesses for this special celebration. The map shows the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad shops two years prior to their being burned to the ground.
