This beautiful reprint of a bird's eye view map of Waupun, Wisconsin was published by Norris, Wellge & Co. in 1885.
This Wisconsin farming community was revolutionized when a Mr. Althouse of Waupun developed a vaneless windmill that powered a pump which helped farmers greatly. In the mid-1800's farmers began using windmills with partially self-regulating devices attached without much progress. Wisconsin's stock and dairy interests now more than ever needed a method of harnessing the wind for power and in 1870 Althouse set about to manufacture the best windmill yet invented. In 1873 George and Albert Raymond joined Althouse in his experimentation with wind engines and in 1874 they patented the Althouse & Raymond Windmill which later with modifications was called the Althouse Vaneless Windmill. The company with the addition of Hon. George F. Wheeler and L. D. Hinkley was now called Althouse, Wheeler & Co. and in the next five years would produce nearly sixty thousand pumps and nearly three thousand wind engines for use in the region and throughout the world. The pumps made were mostly wooden and of all sizes, from a small pump of two inches bore to a large six inch bore pump. Althouse's specially developed device that improved the pump's working ability was a detachable hard maple cylinder in which the bucket functioned.
The Wisconsin State Prison was established in Waupun in the 1850's.
