Description

Weston, West Virginia 1900. Drawn by T. M. Fowler.

The reproduction panoramic view of Weston, West Virginia was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1900. Weston began as a timber and farming community along the West Fork River in the early 1800's. It was called Preston, but the name was soon changed to Fleshersville and finally Weston.

During the American Civil War, as the newly formed West Virginia became an important border state, the recently completed Trans-Alleghany Lunatic Asylum at Weston became the West Virginia Hospital for the Insane. This institution provided care for the mentally handicapped beginning in 1864.

Weston welcomed railroad service in 1880 and prospered through this new lumber transportation method. In the 1890's, oil was discovered near Weston bringing many fortune hunters to the community. The largest oil find was at the Copely Well No. 1 on Sand Fork in 1900. This strike produced thousands of barrels of oil per day for many years.

The map from 1900 shows Weston streets, buildings, bridges and railroad lines.
