Beautiful bird's eye view map of Whitewater, Wisconsin, drawn by Norris, Wellge & Co. in 1885, reprint. Whitewater is a town in Walworth County that is home to the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater. The school opened just off Main Street as the state's second public college in 1868 with nine staff members and thirty-nine students and was called the "State Normal School". Lake Cravath, shown in the foreground of this map, was the resulting pond created by a grist mill erected earlier along Whitewater Creek. The town of Whitewater was named for the white sand beds created by the confluence of Whitewater Creek and Spring Brook.
