Historic Map - Willimantic, CT - 1909
Description
View of Willimantic, Conn. 1909.
Reproduction aero view of the community known as Willimantic, CT, by O. H. Bailey. Willimantic was a census-designated area or borough of Windham, Connecticut, and was incorporated in 1893 as a city. Willimantic was called "Thread City" because of its number of textile mills. Since the end of the Civil War, Willimantic had been a leading center for the production of silk and cotton thread. The American Thread Company was one of the largest employers in the state and was the first factory in the world to use electric lighting. Their thread became one of the world's largest selling threads. The mills drew many immigrants to the area in search of jobs. The town grew in population from less than 5,000 in 1860 to more than 12,000 by 1910. The Prospect Hill section of the city blossomed with over 800 ornate Victorian homes. During the 1890's, Willimantic was one stop on the high-speed "White Train" between Boston and New York. The map features top border illustrations of H. C. Murray Residence, U. S. Post Office, F. D. Jordan Residence, W. P. Jordan Residence, J. C. Tracy Residence, Congregational Church, State Normal School, Windham Court House, High School, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, St. Mary's French Catholic Church, A. I. Bill Residence, S. G.
