Historic Map - Wilmerding, PA - 1897
Description
This aero-view print of Wilmerding, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by Fowler & Moyer in 1897. Wilmerding was established along Turtle Creek when, in the 1880's, George Westinghouse purchased the land on the south side of the creek for an air-brake manufacturing plant.
Wilmerding evolved around the facility and was incorporated as a borough in 1880. The Westinghouse Air Brake general office building on Marguerite Avenue was built in 1889-90 and rebuilt, following a fire, in 1896.
When rebuilt, the Renaissance Revival and Romanesque structure attained its famed clock tower. A boiler house at the building was used to supply power to not only the plant, but a great deal of the borough itself.
The map from 1897 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route.
