Historic Map - Wilmington, DE - 1874
Description
View of Wilmington, New Castle County, D.E., 1874 / drawn & published by H. H. Bailey & Co.
This bird’s-eye view print of Wilmington, Delaware was drawn by H. H. Bailey & Co. and published by G. W. Lewis, Lith. in 1874. Wilmington was established in the 1600's at the confluence of the Christina and Delaware Rivers.
Wilmington was a manufacturing giant during and after the American Civil War. The war effort brought many new manufacturers to the region and with the transportation of the two rivers they were able to ship goods easily. Gunpowder was manufactured aggressively at a facility started by E. I. du Pont on the banks of nearby Brandywine River. Iron ships were produced in the port shipyards, and soldiers’ boots and leather goods of all sorts were made in the town’s war effort. Railroad cars were also built and outfitted in Wilmington on a large scale during this period.
The map includes labeled streets, waterways, bridges, buildings and railroad routes. The featured inset illustration is of Wilmington in 1770.
