Historic Map - Winchester, MA - 1898
Description
This bird’s-eye view print of Winchester, Massachusetts was drawn and published by A. Robbins, Robbins & Enrich Heliotype Co. in 1898. Winchester was settled, northwest of Boston, in the 1640's along the Aberjona River. Winchester was an early farming community supplying the Boston area.
In 1803 the Middlesex Canal was completed through Winchester. The canal, between Boston and Lowell, enabled farmers of Winchester to transport produce more easily. The addition of the Boston & Lowell Railroad, in the mid-1800's, further increased the town’s prosperity, with Winchester receiving two railroad stations.
Manufacturers began taking notice of the region during that era. Sleek factories replaced the mills and Winchester began its modern industrial age. Contemporary industries included leather splitting and wool carding. Piano cases, felt, and fine boots and shoes were manufactured in Winchester during that time.
