Description

Windsor, N.Y. 1887. Drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh. Burleigh Litho. Establishment.

This bird's-eye view map of Windsor, New York was published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1887. Windsor is a town in Broome County located on the Susquehanna River. The vast forests of the area lured Nathan Lane and others to the village where they built saw mills operated by the mighty river's water power. Lane also established the community's first grist mill. In 1835, fifteen saw mills and two grist mills operated in Windsor. Political activities were conducted at Windsor's Eagle Hotel. Elections were conducted at the hotel with inspectors sitting inside and voters handing their ballots in through the windows.

Whips and whip making became important to Windsor during the mid-1800s. Local shoemaker Adin W. Coburn became encouraged by the sales of whips and brought in whip maker Rufus Morey from Massachusetts and the two established a shop in Windsor. The pair became quite wealthy making whips and in 1872 they sold their premises to I. G. Owen. The next year Coburn and Morey opened a new whip factory, giving the community two factories. Linen and cotton goods were manufactured in Windsor as well as leather items. Elias Whitmore and George Dusenbury had successful stores in town.

The Windsor Academy opened in 1836 with its first principal Nathaniel Sumner. In 1868 the academy building was sold to the Union School and it was used as a high school. The "Windsor Standard" was founded in 1878 by Charles E. Babcock.

This panoramic map from 1887 shows Windsor's buildings, railroad route and clearly labeled streets.
