Historic Map - Winona, MN - 1867
Description
View of Winona, Winona County, M.N., 1867 / drawn & published by A. Ruger.
This bird’s-eye view print of Winona, Minnesota was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Chicago Lithographing Co. in 1867. Winona was established in the 1850's along the banks of the Mississippi River. Winona has remained the county seat of Winona County since Minnesota gained statehood in 1858. That same year the state’s first normal school west of the Mississippi was founded at Winona. The school is now known as Winona State University.
Winona prospered in its early years harvesting timber, and raising and processing wheat. Due to the city’s easy river access and new railroad connections Winona was able to boom as a major wheat shipping port.
The illustration includes labeled streets, buildings, railroad route and vicinity. Riverboat and barge activity is portrayed in the foreground including featured steamer “Itasca”. Lake Winona is shown in the distance. There are inset illustrations of the High School and State Normal School.
