Description

Wolcottville, Conn.

Beautifully hand-colored historic map of Wolcottville, Connecticut in 1875, created and published by O. H. Bailey & Co. Now known as Torrington, Wolcottville was settled in the 1700's along the Naugatuck River Valley as a farming community. The 19th century brought several manufacturing companies to the area including its famed brass mills. The fast-moving Naugatuck River aided factories that used it for their waterpower. The Naugatuck Valley Railroad connected the area in 1849. Industry boomed and the area population exploded with the arrival of thousands of immigrants ready to work the plants. Soon Wolcottville became an important producer of a variety of metal products such as bicycles, needles and brass hardware. Wolcottville was the birthplace of abolitionist John Brown.

The map features clearly labeled street names with lively scenes of railroad, carriage and pedestrian traffic. It features inset illustrations of the Mills of the Coe Brass Manufacturing Co., Union Hardware Co., Allen House Property, H. J. Allen, Prop., Union Manufacturing Co. and Turner & Seymour Manufacturing Co. Complete reference list below.
