Historic Map - Yonkers, NY - 1899
Description
This aero view map of Yonkers, New York was published by Landis & Hughes in 1899. The name of Yonkers is derived from the name of the Dutch settler who received the first land grant here from the New Netherland government. Colen Donck, aka Adriaen van der Donck, received a 24,000 acre land grant from the New Netherland Director-General Willem Kieft in 1645, van der Donck was known locally as Jonkheer or Jonker, Dutch for "young gentleman". Van der Donck built a sawmill near where the Nepperhan Creek and Hudson River meet.
"Prominant Business Houses" are indexed on the map, however, due to the reduction in size much of the text is too small to read.
