Description

Map showing the location of the New York & Oswego Midland Railroad with existing and proposed connection, January 1, 1869.

The New York & Oswego Railroad aimed to connect Oswego, on Lake Ontario with New York City at the New Jersey state line. In 1869 the line was opened from Oswego to Norwich.

The line finally reached Jersey City, New Jersey in July of 1873 by way of leased lines. The railroad also maintained steamboat service that connected Long Island.

The railroad went bankrupt soon after beginning its full operation. It was reported at the time that numerous local residents removed the railroad's tracks that ran through their property in fear of not being paid by the company.

The railroad was reorganized in 1879 as the New York, Ontario & Western Railroad.

Cornelius Vanderbilt consolidated the New York Central and the Hudson River Railroad in 1869, making the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad.

That same year, construction began on the Grand Central Terminal on the corner of 42nd Street and 4th Avenue in Manhattan, New York.

This map published in 1869 by Van R. Richmond, state engineer and surveyor, shows New York State and vicinity. The area drainage, canals, cities and towns are displayed. Railroads are clearly labeled.
