Cleveland was founded in the late 1700's on the shores of Lake Erie, near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River. With the addition of several canals in the early 1800's, Cleveland quickly became an important manufacturing and transportation site.
Coal mining was quite important for the economy of Ohio beginning in the early 1800's. The coal regions were mostly in the southern and eastern parts of the state. Coal began to be transported from the coal mines to Cleveland in 1828. There the coal was sold for use by the many steamship companies that traveled through the Great Lakes region. Coal was found to be a more efficient power source for the steamers rather than wood.
Cleveland was incorporated as a city in 1836. It was then conveniently connected with the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Erie Canal and the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the Gulf of Mexico, along the Mississippi River.
The United States iron ore deposits were greatly diminished during the American Civil War. Ohio gained much attention in the 1870's when iron ore was discovered in the southeastern portion of the state.
As railroad systems and industries emerged throughout that part of the country, the demand for coal increased drastically. Ohio coal mine production reached five million tons by the early 1870's.
This map was published in 1873 by O.W. Gray. It shows cities, towns, counties, waterways, canals, Ohio iron ore and coal fields, and clearly labeled railroad network, both completed and proposed.
