Historic Railroad Map of Oklahoma & Indian Territories - 1894
Description
Indian Territory was set aside in the 1830's as a relocation site for indigenous people of the Americas. Oklahoma Territory was organized from the western half of Indian Territory in 1890. Oklahoma, as a whole, earned statehood in 1907.
Fort Reno was established in the 1870's as a U.S. Army post located on the Cheyenne and Arapaho reserve. During the Oklahoma land rushes of the early 1890's, Fort Reno’s soldiers were used to maintain order.
Edmond was established as a water and fuel station along the Santa Fe Railroad in 1887.
Following the Oklahoma Land Run of 1890, Edmond was quickly platted by the Seminole Town and Development Co. to house and supply the freshly arrived homesteaders.
El Reno’s rise was closely associated with the land runs. El Reno was named Canadian County’s seat of government when it was established in 1890.
El Reno housed a depot, machine shops, and yards for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad and maintained a stop along the Choctaw Railway.
Ardmore was founded as a railroad stop along the newly established Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railroad; a branch of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railway.
This map, compiled from the official records of the General Land Office and other sources, was published in 1894 by Rand, McNally & Co. It shows relief, drainage, Indian areas, districts, treaty dates, roads and trails.
Railroad network is clearly labeled.
