The United States officially welcomed Texas as its 26th state in 1845.

Map of the Military Department of Texas: being a section of the map of the territory of the U.S. from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean.

The city of Houston was founded in 1836 near the banks of the Buffalo Bayou. The development of Houston's port and railroad system and the discovery of oil reserves in 1901 have led the city to its current status as the largest within Texas and the fourth largest in the country.

Houston is now home to NASA’s Mission Control Center and the Texas Medical Research Center.

This map captures the state as it appeared just two years before the start of the Civil War.

Telegraph communication between New Orleans, St. Louis and New York City was established in 1850. The New Orleans & Jackson Railway began operations in 1851. It was the first railway northbound from New Orleans.

This relief map of the southwestern United States was published in 1859 for the Office of Explorations and Surveys, War Department.
