Map showing the route and connections of the Memphis and New Orleans Railroad.

The Memphis & New Orleans Railroad & Levee Company was a Mississippi corporation, chartered in 1882 by the legislature of that state.

Controlled by the Louisville, New Orleans & Texas Railway, the railroad had only 56 miles of railway built, by an outside railroad building firm known as the Financial Improvement Company. The building company was paid for their services using the railroad��s company stock.

It was later found out that the Financial Improvement Co., the Louisville, New Orleans & Texas Railway Co., and the Levee Company, though chartered separately, were all controlled by the same people. In an 1887 attempt to foreclose the Levee Company and consolidate it with the railroad company, it was found that both were owned by the Financial Improvement Company.

As rumors of corruption filled the air the consolidation failed and stock in the Levee Company became worthless.

This map of the Gulf states was published in 1882 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It shows cities, towns, counties, waterways, and the 1882 railroad system.
