Map showing the Norfolk and Cincinnati Railroad, and its connections.

The coal regions of North Carolina and Virginia were of great economic importance in in the mid-1800's as more and more railroads turned toward the more practical fuel source.

After the American Civil War, Cincinnati prospered in its production of iron. It also was an important meatpacking, woodworking and millinery town.

The Little Miami Railroad had been serving Cincinnati since 1836.

By 1900 more than 15 railroads linked Cincinnati to other parts of the country.

This map of the southern states was published in 1882 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It shows drainage, cities, towns, counties, mineral deposits, and railroad system with emphasis on the main line.

Map includes portions of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky.
