Map showing the principal railroad routes in the eastern, middle and western states.

This outline map of the north-central and northeastern United States was published in 1853. It displays major destinations, waterways, and the railroad system of the 1850's, specifically featured is the New York & Erie Railroad with its branches and connections, completed or in progress.

The New York & Erie Railroad was chartered in 1832 by the New York state legislature. The original plan was for a broad-gauge line to connect New York City with the Great Lakes that was built entirely within state boundaries. In 1851 the New York and Erie Railroad was completed from Dunkirk, New York to Piermont, New York. President Millard Fillmore, Secretary of State Daniel Webster and other dignitaries spoke before an interested crowd, and were given an inspection ride during the opening ceremony.

The line consisted of the six feet wide track that was largely built upon a low trestle. The railroad wasn’t converted to a standard (4 foot, 8 ½ inch) gauge until the mid-1870's.
