Historic Railroad Map of the Southern United States - 1883 - G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co.
Description
In the 1880's Raleigh could be reached by the North Carolina Railroad, the Raleigh & Augusta Railway or the Raleigh & Gaston Railroad. The Raleigh & Gaston line maintained valuable machine shops and yards in Raleigh.
In the Blue Mountains, Asheville maintained a ferry landing, shipbuilding facilities and tanning factories. Cattle grazing and grain growing were done on a large scale, while gardens teemed with vegetables and orchards produced abundant fruit.
A railroad from Salisbury to Asheville was completed in 1880 giving the community new impetus. Business and manufacturing began to increase, particularly with furniture and cabinet making, and textile production.
This map was published in 1883 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It shows cities, towns, counties and waterways. Railroads are clearly labeled with main line emphasized in red.
Mineral regions are color coded showing lead, zinc, copper, iron, coal, salt and plaster deposits.
Shown are portions of West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.
