Map of Proposed Arizona Territory.

This map of the southwest United States and part of northern Mexico extending from El Paso, Texas to the Pacific Ocean was published in 1857 by Andrew Belcher Gray. It shows the terrain and the proposed and practicable railroad network of that time.

In 1848, with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the Mexican-American War was finally ended. In the war's wake, the United States gained vast areas of land including New Mexico and Arizona. Concerns about connecting the western resources with eastern states weighed heavily on most Americans.

Western railroad explorations were carried out with vigor. Proper routes were beginning to develop. Unexplored areas and notes for further necessary exploration make this map an interesting look back to a time, just before the American Civil War, when all eyes were on the American West.

During the war Arizona was claimed by Jefferson Davis to support the Confederacy, while the New Mexico Territory at the east was claimed by the Union. The division drawn at that time defined the two states and both were granted statehood in 1912.
