The California & Nevada Railroad was a narrow-gauge line that covered the East Bay portion of San Francisco Bay in the late 1800's.

Chinese immigrant laborers had been highly involved in the extension of railroad lines into California during the mid-1800's. In 1882 Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, preventing Chinese immigrant laborers from entering the United States for ten years. The Act was extended in 1892, and again in 1904.

This map of the southwest United States was published in 1882 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It displays relief, drainage, cities, towns, counties, and the railroad system of 1882.
