Historic Railroad Map of the United States - 1874
Description
This detailed map of the continental United States and portions of Canada and Mexico was published in 1874 by N.H. Concord and D.L. Guernsey. It shows relief, drainage, cities, towns, forts, canals, stage roads, railroads, and proposed railroads.
An illustrated "View from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean" is displayed across the top.
Included is a distance chart between Washington and principal locations. Interesting facts about the individual states, populations of counties according to a 1870 census report, and mini-biographies of United States Presidents surround the map.
"The United States extend from the Atlantic To the Pacific Ocean, and from the British Possessions of North America to Mexico. The first English settlement was at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. All the colonies and settlements subsequently organized were under English rule until the Declaration of Independence, in July 4, 1776. Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, adopted the articles of union in the year 1777. The Constitution, accepted by these States, went into effect March 1, 1789. It is the supreme law of the land, and entrusts the Government to three authorities, the Legislative vested in Congress, the Executive vested in the President, and the Judicial vested in the Supreme Court."
Inset is of Central America.
