Description

Map showing the Geneva and Hornellsville Railroad and its connections.

New York’s advancements in transportation were significant in the 1850's.

Additions to railroad transportation in New York State during the mid-1800's, led to much additional settlement of western New York.

Geneva, located at the north end of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region, had earlier prospered as an important source of fruits and vegetables situated along side the Erie Canal and the Cayuga-Seneca Canal.

When the railroad reached Geneva in the 1840's new industries were established in the commercial district and the area became known as "the bottom lands".

A number of lines were added to New York's railroad system during the mid-1800's, reaching the western regions of the state, and providing connections into Pennsylvania and Canada.

Several railroad lines were built, during this time period, to transport anthracite coal from mines in eastern Pennsylvania to New York's industrial areas.

The Geneva and Hornellsville Railway was organized in 1875. In 1876 it was known as the Geneva, Hornellsville and Pine Creek Railway. In 1879 it became part of the Lake Ontario Southern Railroad.

This map of western New York and part of Pennsylvania was published in 1875 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It displays drainage, counties, cities and towns. Railroads are clearly labeled with noted mileage between stations.
