Description

Yreka and Mt. Shasta, Siskiyou County, CA. 1884

Yreka emerged during the 1850's as a gold mining encampment for speculators of the Rocky Gulch Gold Strike discovered just north of there. As rumors of the gold strike filled the West, Yreka began to bustle with activity. The town grew with the mining industry, and in 1889 it began to be served by the Yreka Railroad. The railroad ran a small branch which connected the somewhat isolated community with the Southern Pacific Railway.

This map, looking southeast, was drawn and published in 1884 by F.A. Walpole, Beck & Pauli Lith. It shows labeled streets and buildings, with Mt. Shasta rising in the distance.
